Deferred blending: Image composition for single-pass point rendering

چکیده
In this paper, we propose novel GPU accelerated algorithms for interactive point-based rendering (PBR) and high-quality shading of transparent point surfaces. By introducing the concept of deferred blending we are able to formulate the smooth point interpolation problem as an image compositing post-processing task. Consequently, our new PBR algorithm does not suffer from an extra visibilitysplatting pre-render pass, for conservative e–z-buffer visibility culling, as this is eventually performed together with the smooth point interpolation during image compositing. Moreover, this new deferred blending concept enables hardware accelerated transparent PBR with combined effects of multi-layer transparency, refraction, specular reflection, and per-fragment shading. Deferred blending is based on a separation of the point data into not self-overlapping minimal independent groups, a multi-target rendering pass and an image compositing post-processing stage. We present different grouping algorithms for off-line and on-line processing. For basic opaque surface rendering and simple transparency effects, our novel algorithm only needs a single geometry rendering pass. For high-quality transparent image synthesis one extra rendering pass is sufficient. Besides transparency, per-fragment reflective and refractive multi-layer effects (e.g. environment mapping) are supported in our algorithm. r 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Single-Pass Point Rendering and Transparent Shading
Hardware accelerated point-based rendering (PBR) algorithms have suffered in the past from multiple rendering passes; possibly a performance limiting factor. Two passes over the point geometry have been necessary because a first visibility-splatting pass has been necessary for conservative ε-z-buffer visibility culling in the following point-interpolation rendering pass. This separation into vi...
متن کاملStreaming G-Buffer Compression for Multi-Sample Anti-Aliasing
We present a novel lossy compression algorithm for G-buffers that enables deferred shading applications with high visibility sampling rates. Our streaming compression method operates in a single geometry rendering pass with a fixed, but scalable, amount of per pixel memory. We demonstrate reduced memory requirements and improved performance, with minimal impact on image quality.
متن کاملSingle-pass Multi-view Rendering
The fundamental drawback of current stereo and multi-view display techniques is the necessity to perform multi-pass rendering (one pass for each separate view) and subsequent image composition-andmasking for generating multi-stereo views. Thus the rendering time increases in general linearly with the number of rendered views. An increase in frame-rate can be achieved by sub-resolution rendering...
متن کاملReal-Time Point-Based Rendering Using Visibility Map
Because of its simplicity and intuitive approach, pointbased rendering has been a very popular research area. Recent approaches have focused on hardware-accelerated techniques. By applying a deferred shading scheme, both high-quality images and high-performance rendering have been achieved. However, previous methods showed problems related to depth-based visibility computation. We propose an ex...
متن کاملEfficient Point-Based Rendering Using Image Reconstruction
Image-space reconstruction of continuous surfaces from scattered one-pixel projections of points is known to potentially offer an advantageous time complexity compared to surface splatting techniques. We propose a new algorithm for hardware-accelerated image-space reconstruction using pull-push interpolation and present an efficient GPU implementation. Compared to published image-space reconstr...
